In my 20’s, I started having health issues that seemed unusual for someone so young and healthy. Bloating. Stomach aches. Chronic sinus infections. Muscle pain. A weak immune system. Over the years, the symptoms seemed to escalate, despite what I thought was a healthy diet and lifestyle. I had achieved my dreams of being an evening television news anchor. But my body was not cooperating, making it difficult to perform at the high level I expected of myself. Debilitating fatigue. Illnesses that would take me out for weeks. Reactions to foods. Constant hives. Throat issues.
I went to dozens and dozens of doctors over decades, and no one could figure out why this was happening. They all recommended prescription medications, which just seemed to lead to more symptoms, and never addressed what caused this in the first place. My quality of life was not what I had hoped and dreamed.
When my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, it became clear I needed to leave my broadcast journalism career to care for her as well as myself. Desperate for answers, I decided to put my energy and passion into learning more about functional medicine. I became my own detective to try to uncover why my body was going down this path and how to turn it around.
The connection between food and symptoms was a light bulb moment in my 20’s. But the functional approach took it to a whole new level. Also, now crystal clear is that diet is an excellent starting point, but there’s so much more to unraveling complex health issues.
I learned a system of mapping to uncover where the dysfunction in my body began. Then the functional testing revealed clues that no allopathic physician had found before. It was disheartening to realize I could have suffered for many more decades and been to countless more doctors if I had not discovered what I did from these cutting edge tests. Using a holistic approach to address it all, my body was finally given a chance to start healing itself.
This knowledge ignited a passion and purpose to help others. No one should suffer needlessly. My goal is to help you find the root cause of your symptoms, so you can live the highest quality of life possible.
Another reason I do this work . . .
I lost my dad when I was eight years old. He was only in his 40’s and had a massive heart attack with no prior warning. It runs in my family. His father died the same way, also in his 40’s. As I grew up, I couldn’t help but wonder if we knew then what we know now, if they would have survived.
Losing a parent that young does many things to you. But one of the most important is it makes you value your health and not take life for granted starting at a young age.
Cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s also run in my family. It can be paralyzing if you let it. I’ve often felt like I was in a race against time to figure out how to keep those genes from impacting me physically.
But we know so much more now. We know through the study of epigenetics, your genes don’t necessarily determine your destiny. You have a much greater say than we used to think in how those genes express themselves.
Part of why I do this work is I don’t want anyone else to go through what my family did and lose a parent or loved one so young. It just doesn’t have to be that way. You no longer have to feel like a victim of your genes. We now understand your genes are controlled by your diet, exercise, stress, thoughts, environment, and more. There’s a peace you find when you know you’re doing everything in your power to create good health.
I knew when I started down this path as a practitioner, that if I could help at least one person, it would all be worth it. It’s an honor and privilege to be a part of my clients’ health journeys all over the world, and see them living lives they didn’t realize were possible.
